Aufzüge gab es bereits im alten Ägypten vor rund 4.500 Jahren. Man setzte sie vor allem beim Pyramidenbau zum Transport von Lasten ein. Am 27. Januar 1818 meldete William Horner das Patent für den Fahrstuhl - einen "Kraftapparat, der bei sehr wenig Reibung einen sehr kleinen Raum einnimmt" - an.
