IMPORTANT SEARCHERS’ NOTE AFTER DESCRIPTION
They came so close …
This little patch of spare ground was created by the necessary change in direction of the final fifty metres of Queen street so that it made a safe intersection with Moore-Oxley Bypass. Wedged up against the unforgiving railway line it only left a funny little pocket of land that was too small for placing even the smallest building. And in any case, traffic in this neck of the woods can be a bit hazardous for anyone trying to enter and leave the roadway (or cross it) with safety.
But rather than surrender it to the weeds, Campelltown Council constructed a delightful corner of the cityscape, all the more worthy because it was always going to be a little spot that most of those driving past never even noticed. But once you HAVE noticed it, you cannot drive by without giving it a glance and thinking “I’d wouldn't mind spending a few minutes wandering along the path there … maybe even sit awhile and enjoy the fact that I was here soaking up this quiet nook while everyone else has their eyes roadward as they race off to wherever they need to be” (Well, that thought’s occurred to me!
So, hats off to the council! Except … whoever had the job of naming it 1. Was tossed the job when they already had a stack of stuff on their plate, or 2. Gets the prize for being the most boring and unimaginative person in the council’s employ. When you check it out, it has the vanilla title of “Queen Street Park”. Well, that took a nanosecond of brainwork to think up!
So here’s the plan ... I’m calling it “Pocket Park” for now. But all cache finders in the first 12 months are invited to suggest a new park name, preferably when they log, but any time in the 12 months after publication is ok. After that time, a small but select and knowledgeable group (who don’t even know who they are yet … because I don’t even know who they are) will go through the difficult task of agreeing on an alternative*. FTF can have 3 bites at the cherry, if he/she wants to. And yes, it may be that people doing the judging have also made name suggestions. Just like politicians, who also can vote for themselves!
Of course, people may think it’s a dumb idea. Or at least so trivial they forget all about it. I can live with that. “Pocket Park” it will stay.
*note ... sadly, this is not a change that will have any recognition beyond this cache page. But hey, "Great oaks from little acorns .." and all that!
SEARCHERS’ NOTE … Crossing the road here can be a risky option. It is safer to avoid this by parking in Hughes St (W/P 1) or at one of the businesses in Blaxland Rd (W/P 2), and walking over the railway bridge.
Yo ho ho and another FTF for the Jaybeem! crew.
