Geocache Description:

The Ōtūkaikino River runs for about 13 kilometres, starting at McLeans Island and flowing through a series of restored wetlands before joining the Waimakariri River. This cache is located on the south branch of the Ōtūkaikino Track—a 3 km walking and biking path that follows the river near its confluence with the Waimakariri.

Historically, the river was considered wai tapu—sacred water—by Māori, who used it for cleansing rituals before burial. Over time, development and land use changes caused the river’s health to decline. Water quality dropped, plant life was lost, and sediment and runoff took a toll.

You'll notice how clear the water is—thanks in large part to extensive native planting and wetland restoration over recent years. These efforts have significantly improved water quality, reducing phosphorus levels and revitalizing the local ecosystem. In recognition of this progress, the Ōtūkaikino River was awarded first place at the New Zealand River Awards several years ago.

At the cache location, it's clear to see the result of the upstream work that’s gone into bringing this river back. It's a good example of how ongoing care and local action can make a real difference.

You can reach this cache from two main access points:

  • Whites Crossing Carpark (North): Located near the Waimakariri River – approximately 1.6 km walk or ride to the cache.
  • Dickeys Road Entrance (South): Approximately 1.4 km walk or ride to the cache.

🚫  Please note: This cache cannot be accessed directly from the motorway.
