IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WRITING INSTRUMENT OR CLAIM THE LOG IS TOO WET THEN YOU MUST POST A PHOTO OF THE CONTAINER & LOG TO CLAIM A FIND.
Park along the wide shoulder area in front of the graveyard, you will find the large sign (see image) that marks the trailhead nearby (trail is to the LEFT of the sign at the posted trailhead co-ords). DO NOT attempt to access the lighthouse or the cache via Ganong Rd; this will only take you to private homes. You have to WALK to this cache. The trail from the road to the lighthouse is .25 kms, a little less to the cache. The trail itself is lined with lily-of-the-valley and to the left you will notice a grove of maple trees with extensive tubing for collecting sap in March for making maple syrup. In late summer & fall you will likely spot various fungus growing on the woodland floor or on the rotting branches cut down to clear the trail. Also watch your step on the wooden pallets that cross the wet portion of the trail.
The Cedars Lighthouse was established in 1904 and is one of only a handful of lighthouses remaining on the Saint John River. All but two of them were built to guide the riverboats to the many wharves dotting the river from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries where they gathered goods for market from local farmers and discharged city folk for a sojourn at one of the graceful hotels along the banks of the river, like the one here known as The Cedars.
The wharf and the hotel are long gone and the lighthouse was deemed surplus to needs in 1996. In 2005 the site, including the wooded right-of-way was acquired by Peninsula Heritage Inc. The trail was opened in 2008 but the lighthouse was allowed to deteriorate for 16 years until a restoration was completed in 2021. Unfortunately they removed the official designation plaque that was on the door that was part of an off-set cache that some may remember from past years. So now the cache is just a regular cache that doesn’t require you to actually complete the trail to the lighthouse but since you are almost there anyway why would you not? It is less than 200 feet and offers a beautiful view of the St John River; there is even a picnic table!
Cache is a small camo’d container that contains a pill bottle inside with the log. Please make sure everything is sealed tightly when you are done and the cache is hidden as well or better than you found it. Cache is NOT winter friendly.
