Red Dwarf is a British sci-fi comedy show about the last human being Dave Lister who is stuck on a 5 mile long Jupiter Mining Corporation spaceship named the Red Dwarf as he tries to find his way back to Earth. Lister was locked into stasis because he tried to smuggle his pet cat on the ship. While he was locked in stasis, a radiation leak killed the entire crew and the Red Dwarf headed to the far reaches of space to keep the radiation contamination from spreading. Three million years later, Lister was released from stasis. With Lister on this mining spaceship is a being named Cat that evolved from his cat, a Series 4000 mechanoid named Kryten, a hologram of his bunkmate named Arnold Rimmer and the sentient, "tenth-generation" artificial intelligence computer named Holly.
Lister has (sorry, I should say “had”) big plans for his future before he joined up (sorry again, I should say “got stuck on”) the Jupiter Mining Corporation ship “Red Dwarf”. His life long goal was to buy a farm in Fiji and open a hot dog stand and have a sheep and a cow and breed horses (with horses and horses). Lister had snuck a cat aboard Red Dwarf and got caught. Instead of handing the cat over, Lister took the punishment of being sent into stasis for the rest of the journey and forfeit his pay. While he was in stasis, a radiation leak caused by his bunkmate’s mistake killed off the entire crew (don’t worry, his cat survived while hiding in a lower deck of the ship). Lister was protected from the radiation leak and the ship’s computer Holly sent Red Dwarf into the far depths of space till the radiation could drop to a safe level.
Three million years later, LIster emerges from stasis to find out that he is the last human. A hologram of his dead bunkmate (Arnold Rimmer) was activated to keep him company. To Lister’s surprise, his cat Frankenstein had kittens while she was hiding in the lower decks. As time went on, the cats eventually bred and evolved into their own intelligent species. Lister and Rimmer find one of the cats that had remained on Red Dwarf since the others left to find their “god” which happens to be Lister!
Lister’s ultimate goal now is to return to Earth. But Red Dwarf’s supercomputer has turned senile over three million years and is having troubles finding their way back home. So far over 13 seasons have been made of Red Dwarf as it covers their comedic adventures to get to Earth.
Lister plays the role of the loveable idiot on the show even though he seems smart at times and is able to help the crew get out of many situations they run into. It looks like he was able to go back in time, maybe through some dimension doorway and hide another cache for us to find in the past. His past... our present time and future. Man, time travel is silly...
