“欲把西湖比西子,淡妆浓抹总相宜。” 西湖的美,早已被诗人传颂千年。但你是否知道,这片如画的湖水并非天生如此?它曾是一片与大海相连的潟湖(Lagoon),历经自然演变与人工改造,才成为今天的淡水湖。

现在,请跟随这个 Earthcache 任务,寻找西湖作为潟湖的地质证据,揭开它从咸水海湾到世界文化遗产的传奇故事!

什么是潟湖?

潟湖是海岸带极具特色的地貌景观,其形成源于沙坝或沙洲对海湾的渐进封堵。这一过程始于强大的沿岸流和波浪作用,它们持续搬运并堆积沉积物(如沙、砾石),最终在湾口筑起一道水下“门槛”。随着沉积物不断加积,这道门槛逐渐露出水面,形成一道将海湾与开阔海洋分隔开来的沙坝或沙洲屏障。这道屏障阻隔了海水与海湾的直接连通,被圈闭的海湾水体便形成了初始的潟湖。

潟湖并非千篇一律,其形态与规模受控于原始海湾的轮廓、沿岸沉积物供应丰度及水动力强弱:

  • 海岸潟湖: 最为普遍,形成于平直或微弯的海岸线前,由平行于海岸的沙嘴或沙坝封堵而成,通常呈狭长状。
  • 封堵海湾潟湖: 形成于深入陆地的海湾,沙坝横亘于两个岬角之间将其封闭。实际属于海岸潟湖的亚类。
  • 环礁潟湖: 珊瑚礁生态系统的核心,被环形珊瑚礁环绕,中央水体即为潟湖。

西湖的千年蜕变

1.2 万年前冰后期,西湖区域是钱塘江口的海湾。至 2000 多年前的东汉时期,泥沙堆积形成沙坝封闭海湾,诞生咸水潟湖。随着溪流淡水持续注入,湖水逐渐淡化。唐宋时期,人们开始大规模治理西湖——白居易疏浚淤泥、修筑白堤,苏轼建造苏堤,使潟湖彻底转变为稳定的淡水湖。可以说,西湖是自然与人类智慧共同塑造的杰作。

The beauty of West Lake has been celebrated by poets for millennia. But did you know this picturesque lake wasn't always so? It was once a lagoon connected to the sea, evolving through natural processes and human intervention to become the freshwater lake we see today.

Now, join this Earthcache mission to find geological evidence of West Lake's lagoon origins and uncover its legendary transformation from a saltwater bay to a World Heritage Site!

What is a Lagoon?

Lagoons are distinctive coastal landforms created when sandbars or spits progressively enclose a bay. This process begins with powerful coastal currents and wave action, which continuously transport and deposit sediments (like sand and gravel), eventually forming an underwater "sill" across the bay's entrance. As sediments accumulate, this sill emerges above water, creating a barrier that separates the bay from the open ocean. This barrier restricts direct seawater exchange, trapping the bay's waters to form an initial lagoon.

Lagoons are diverse, their shapes and sizes shaped by the original bay's contours, sediment supply, and hydrodynamic forces:

  • Coastal Lagoons: Most common, formed along straight or gently curved coastlines when sandbars or spits parallel to the shore enclose the bay, typically appearing elongated.
  • Enclosed Bay Lagoons: Formed in bays indented into the land, where a sandbar spans between two headlands, sealing them off. This is a subtype of coastal lagoons.
  • Atoll Lagoons: The heart of coral reef ecosystems, formed by a ring of coral reefs encircling a central body of water – the lagoon.

West Lake's Millennia-Long Transformation

12,000 years ago, during the post-glacial period, the West Lake area was a bay at the mouth of the Qiantang River. By the Eastern Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago, silt deposition eventually sealed off the bay, creating a saltwater lagoon. Continuous freshwater inflow from streams gradually desalinated the lake. During the Tang and Song dynasties, large-scale human management began – Bai Juyi dredged silt and built the Bai Causeway; Su Shi constructed the Su Causeway – transforming the lagoon completely into a stable freshwater lake. Truly, West Lake is a masterpiece shaped by both nature and human ingenuity.

Tasks

To log this Earthcache as "Found", visit the coordinates and answer the following questions:

  1. Stand on the causeway (Bai Causeway) and observe the water level on both sides. Estimate approximately how many meters above the lake surface the causeway road sits. According to nearby information boards or official sources, what is the average depth of West Lake?
  2. Observe the color, clarity, and flow of West Lake's water (compared to rivers or streams you've seen). What characteristics typical of a lentic (still water/lake) body does it display? How might this relate to its origin as a lagoon (an isolated bay)? (Hint: Consider water flow speed and sediment settling conditions).
  3. Observe the structure of the Bai Causeway (your location) or other visible shorelines (like Su Causeway). What is the primary material composing the causeway/shore? What is the core function of long causeways like Bai Causeway within the lake? How does this help maintain West Lake as a freshwater lake (preventing re-salinization or siltation)?
  4. Without continuous human intervention (like building causeways and dredging), based on West Lake's natural lagoon characteristics (shallow, fed by streams carrying sediment), which natural evolution outcome do you think is most likely? Choose one option and briefly state your reasoning:
    • Swampification (Aquatic plants spreading and filling the shallows)
    • Siltation into land
    • Shrinking into an isolated pond and gradually drying up
  5. Take a photo of yourself or a personal item with the West Lake landscape. The photo should capture characteristic features of the Earthcache location (e.g., the Bai Causeway itself, the lake on both sides, distant hills, or iconic buildings). Ensure the photo does not reveal task answers (e.g., height references, text on info boards). This photo can be uploaded with your log.
