While travelling through Waverley recently a street sign caught the eye of That Darn Bear. Bear Street. He knew straight away that he was destined to place a cache somewhere along this street, since the people of Waverley had obviously named the street in his honour.
What we won't tell him, is that Bear Street is actually named for Lt. John Bear, a military figure associated with the establishment of the town as a military settlement in the 1860s. Waverley was originally known as Wairoa and was a fortified redoubt during the New Zealand Wars, with its symmetrical layout and street names reflecting its military origins.
Bear Street also hosts the fire station and the Town Hall. As always, be mindful of muggles, and please replace as found.
