In Hallenhaus zu Esch an der Sauer war vor alter Zeit einmal die Magd beschäftigt, abends die Schuhe der Hausbewohner zu putzen. Eine Katze saß neben ihr und sah zu. Da die Magd ihre eigenen Schuhe zuerst reinigte, sprach die Katze: „Es ist nicht Brauch, dass die Magd ihre Schuhe zuerst reinigt.“ – „Es ist auch nicht Brauch, erwiderte die Magd, dass die Katzen sprechen“, und mit diesen Worten schlug sie der Katze den Absatz ihres Schuhes ins Gesicht. Mit einem Satz sprang die Katze zur offenen Tür hinaus und die Treppe hinauf.
Am andern Morgen wollte die Hausfrau nicht aufstehen; als sie endlich herunterkam, sah man die Spuren der Nägel des Schuhabsatzes, mit dem die Magd sie geschlagen, in ihrem Gesicht abgedrückt. Diese Frau war eine Hexe.

D'un bond, le chat se précipita vers la porte ouverte et monta les escaliers.
Le lendemain matin, la maîtresse de maison ne voulait pas se lever ; lorsqu'elle descendit enfin, on pouvait voir sur son visage les traces des ongles du talon de la chaussure avec laquelle la servante l'avait frappée. Cette femme était une sorcière.

In a hall house in Esch an der Sauer, there was once a maid who was busy cleaning the shoes of the house's residents in the evening. A cat sat next to her and watched. Since the maid cleaned her own shoes first, the cat said, ‘It is not customary for the maid to clean her shoes first.’ ‘Nor is it customary for cats to speak,’ replied the maid, and with these words she struck the cat in the face with the heel of her shoe. With one leap, the cat jumped out of the open door and up the stairs.
The next morning, the housewife did not want to get up; when she finally came downstairs, the marks of the nails on the heel of the shoe with which the maid had struck her were visible on her face. This woman was a witch.
