Ein Müller, dessen Mühle zu Heiderscheidergrund stand, ging auf den Markt, um einen Knecht zu dingen. Da traf er einen jungen Burschen an, der groß und stark war, und fragte ihn, ob er sein Knecht werden wolle.
„Wieviel Knechte hast du, Müller, denn dieses Jahr gehabt?“, fragte der Bursche.
– „Dreißig“, sagte der Müller.
– „Nun gut, ich will dein einunddreißigster werden; aber du musst mir monatlich dreißig Franken Lohn geben und mir ein scharfes Beil zur Hand legen.“
– „Topp, sagte der Müller und schlug dem Knechte in die Hand, der Handel ist abgeschlossen; du bist mein Knecht, und ich gebe dir mein frisch geschliffenes Handbeil.“
Sie tranken eine Flasche Wein und gingen zusammen auf die Mühle. Wie sie durchs Dorf schritten, hörte der Müllerknecht die Leute sagen:
„Der arme Junge, der muss auch bald sein Leben lassen.“
– „Wenn das sich so verhält, dachte der Knecht bei sich, dann weiß ich's anzufangen. Meine Vorgänger haben nachts geschlafen und sind ins Kammrad geworfen worden. Das geschieht mir nicht.“
Als es Nacht geworden, begab sich der Knecht zu Bett, nachdem er das Korn auf die Trimme (Mühlentrichter) geschüttet, und wachte. Aber es kam niemand, auch die zweite Nacht wurde er nicht belästigt und er dachte: „Du musst es anders machen.“ Die dritte Nacht stellte er sich, als wenn er schliefe. Um zwölf Uhr hörte er vier Katzen die Treppe heraufkommen. Die erste sagte: „E biift“; die drei anderen sagten: „E biift net“, und sie kehrten wieder um. Der Knecht fing an zu schnarchen, und es währte nicht lange, da kamen sie zurück. Die beiden vordersten sagten: „E biift“, die beiden hintersten sagten: „E biift net“ und sie kehrten wieder um. Da schnarchte der Knecht so laut, wie die Mühlenräder klapperten, und die Katzen kamen zum drittenmal die Treppe heraufgetrippelt. Die drei vordersten sagten: „E biift“, die hinterste sagte nichts und schüttelte den Kopf. Sie sprangen auf den Knecht zu und wollten ihn ins Kammrad werfen, aber er schlug mit seinem scharfen Beil um sich und hieb der einen Katze die vordere Pfote, der andern die hintere ab und die dritte verwundete er bloß; die vierte entkam ohne Wunde. „Aha!, dachte der Knecht, morgen werden wir sehen, wer die Hexen sind.“ Und richtig, des Müllers eigener Frau hatte er den Arm, der Nachbarin ein Bein abgehauen, die beiden andern Frauen waren verschwunden. Die Müllerin und ihre Nachbarin wurden verurteilt und als Hexen verbrannt.

« D'accord », dit le meunier en frappant dans la main du garçon, « l'affaire est conclue ; tu es mon valet et je te donnerai ma hache fraîchement affûtée. »
Ils burent une bouteille de vin et se rendirent ensemble au moulin. En traversant le village, le valet du meunier entendit les gens dire :
« Pauvre garçon, il va bientôt perdre la vie. »
« Si tel est le cas, pensa le valet, je sais comment m'y prendre. Mes prédécesseurs dormaient la nuit et ont été jetés dans la roue du moulin. Cela ne m'arrivera pas. »

Ils bondirent sur le valet et voulurent le jeter dans la roue du moulin, mais il se défendit avec sa hache tranchante et coupa la patte avant d'un chat, la patte arrière d'un autre et blessa le troisième ; le quatrième s'enfuit sans être blessé. « Ah ah ! pensa le valet, demain, nous verrons bien qui sont les sorcières. » Et effectivement, il avait coupé le bras de la femme du meunier et la jambe de la voisine, les deux autres femmes avaient disparu. La meunière et sa voisine furent condamnées et brûlées comme sorcières.
English: The miller's apprentice who exposed the witches
A miller whose mill stood in Heiderscheidergrund went to the market to hire a servant. There he met a young man who was tall and strong, and asked him if he wanted to become his apprentice.
‘How many apprentices have you had this year, miller?’ asked the young man.
‘Thirty,’ said the miller.
‘Very well, I will be your thirty-first, but you must give me thirty francs a month and provide me with a sharp axe.’
‘Done,’ said the miller, shaking the servant's hand. ‘The deal is done; you are my apprentice, and I will give you my freshly sharpened axe.’
They drank a bottle of wine and went together to the mill. As they walked through the village, the miller's apprentice heard the people say:
‘Poor boy, he'll soon lose his life.’
‘If that's the case,’ thought the apprentice to himself, ‘then I know what to do. My predecessors slept at night and were thrown into the cogwheel. That won't happen to me.’
When night fell, the farmhand went to bed after pouring the grain into the hopper and stayed awake. But no one came, and he was not disturbed during the second night either, so he thought, ‘You have to do it differently.’ On the third night, he pretended to be asleep. At midnight, he heard four cats coming up the stairs. The first said, ‘E biift’; the other three said, ‘E biift net,’ and they turned back. The farmhand began to snore, and it wasn't long before they returned. The two in front said, ‘E biift,’ the two behind said, ‘E biift net,’ and they turned back again. Then the servant snored as loudly as the mill wheels rattled, and the cats came tripping up the stairs for the third time. The three in front said, ‘E biift,’ the one behind said nothing and shook its head. They jumped at the farmhand and wanted to throw him into the cogwheel, but he swung his sharp axe and cut off the front paw of one cat, the back paw of another, and wounded the third; the fourth escaped unharmed. ‘Aha!’ thought the farmhand, ‘tomorrow we'll see who the witches are.’ And sure enough, he had cut off the miller's own wife's arm and the neighbour's leg, and the other two women had disappeared. The miller's wife and her neighbour were convicted and burned as witches.
