Das Goldfeuer bei Esch an der Sauer
Im Ort genannt „op Stëpelescht“ bei Eschdorf soll vor Jahren ein Geldfeuer gebrannt haben.
Einst kam ein Mann, der zu Heiderscheidergrund Schule hielt, in später Abendstunde an diesem Ort vorbei. Auf einmal sah er einige Meter vor sich ein lustiges Feuer brennen, an dem zwei wild aussehende Männer saßen. Der Mann hielt sie für die Kohlenbrenner, die sich in der Zeit viel in dieser Gegend aufhielten, und ging hinzu, um sich sein Pfeifchen, das unterwegs ausgebrannt war, wieder anzuzünden.
Er nahm eine Kohle und legte sie in die Pfeife; aber in demselben Augenblick war die Kohle schwarz. Er nahm eine zweite, eine dritte, aber jedes Mal war die Kohle erloschen, sobald sie auf der Pfeife lag. Als er endlich die vierte nehmen wollte, sagte der eine der Männer, der ihn bis dahin scharf beobachtet hatte, zu ihm: “Geh, für heute hast du genug!“ Unser Mann kümmerte sich jedoch wenig um diese Rede, sondern wollte wieder zugreifen.
Als er aber sah, dass der zweite Mann jetzt Miene machte, aufzustehen und ihn beim Kragen zu fassen, da ließ er sich nicht wieder anfahren, sondern machte sich schnell aus dem Staub.
Als er am andern Morgen seine Pfeife zur Hand nahm, sah er in derselben drei glänzende Goldstücke liegen. “So, dachte der Mann, jetzt hast du doch etwas für den ausgestandenen Schrecken von gestern Abend.“
Das Geldfeuer “op Stëpelescht“ soll noch heute brennen, aber unter der Erde; es wird von zwei Hexen gehütet und wer es auffindet, der soll ein reicher Mann werden.

Dans le village appelé « op Stëpelescht » près d'Eschdorf, un feu d'or aurait brûlé il y a des années.
Un jour, un homme qui allait à l'école à Heiderscheidergrund passa par là tard dans la soirée. Soudain, il aperçut à quelques mètres devant lui un feu joyeux autour duquel étaient assis deux hommes à l'air sauvage. L'homme les prit pour des charbonniers, qui fréquentaient beaucoup cette région à l'époque, et s'approcha pour rallumer sa pipe qui s'était éteinte en chemin.
Il prit un charbon et le mit dans sa pipe, mais au même instant, le charbon devint noir. Il en prit un deuxième, puis un troisième, mais à chaque fois, le charbon s'éteignait dès qu'il touchait la pipe. Alors qu'il s'apprêtait à prendre le quatrième, l'un des hommes, qui l'observait attentivement, lui dit : « Va-t'en, tu en as assez eu pour aujourd'hui ! » Notre homme ne prêta toutefois guère attention à ces paroles et voulut recommencer.
Mais lorsqu'il vit que le deuxième homme faisait mine de se lever et de l'attraper par le col, il ne se laissa pas approcher et prit rapidement la fuite.
Le lendemain matin, lorsqu'il prit sa pipe, il vit trois pièces d'or brillantes à l'intérieur. « Voilà, pensa l'homme, j'ai maintenant quelque chose pour compenser la frayeur que j'ai eue hier soir. »
Le feu de l'argent « op Stëpelescht » brûlerait encore aujourd'hui, mais sous terre ; il serait gardé par deux sorcières et celui qui le trouverait deviendrait un homme riche.

Years ago, a money fire is said to have burned in a place called ‘op Stëpelescht’ near Eschdorf.
Once upon a time, a man who attended school in Heiderscheidergrund passed by this place late in the evening. Suddenly, he saw a cheerful fire burning a few metres ahead of him, with two wild-looking men sitting around it. The man thought they were charcoal burners, who were often in the area at that time, and went over to relight his pipe, which had gone out on the way.
He took a piece of coal and put it in his pipe, but at that very moment the coal turned black. He took a second and a third, but each time the coal went out as soon as it touched the pipe. When he finally wanted to take the fourth, one of the men, who had been watching him closely, said to him: ‘Go, you've had enough for today!’ Our man paid little attention to these words, however, and wanted to try again.
But when he saw that the second man was now making a move to get up and grab him by the collar, he did not let himself be provoked again, but quickly took to his heels.
When he picked up his pipe the next morning, he saw three shiny gold coins lying in it. ‘Well,’ thought the man, ‘now you have something for the fright you had last night.’
The money fire ‘op Stëpelescht’ is said to still burn today, but underground; it is guarded by two witches, and whoever finds it will become a rich man.
