REALLY SideTracked – Audlem
Flanders and Swann Slow Train event No 19.
After a break, the Slow Train series continues with a geocaching meet-up between 7 and 7.30pm on Monday 7th July, in Audlem.
This is the next in a series of SideTracked events based on the song Slow Train by Flanders and Swann. Written in 1963, the song laments the closure of many stations and railway lines under the Beeching cuts of that era.
"The sleepers sleep at Audlem and Ambergate,
No passenger waits on Chittening Platform or Cheslyn Hay..."
About SideTracked Caches
This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.
About Audlem station

A colourised photo of Audlem station
Audlem station was built by the Nantwich and Market Drayton Railway (N&MDR) and opened on 20 October 1863, although the line was operated by the Great Western Railway from its opening, and the N&MDR eventually amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1897. The line passed on to the Western Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, and was then closed to passengers by the British Railways Board on 9 September 1963.
There is now little evidence of the station, which has now been built over by a new housing estate.
The event
The event will take place on the corner of Whitchurch Road and Heywoods Ridge, which is as close as I can estimate to the site of the station. There should be parking available in some of the local side-roads, though please be considerate to local residents.
