Geocache Description:

SLO

ENG
The Kamniška Bistrica Valley is located in the north of Slovenia, beneath the majestic peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It stretches for about 15 kilometers, from the town of Kamnik to the source of the river of the same name, the Kamniška Bistrica, which springs from beneath the steep walls of Kamniško Sedlo and Brana. The valley is renowned for its exceptional natural beauty, with picturesque forests, towering mountain cliffs, rapids, pools, waterfalls, and karst springs. It is a popular destination for hikers, mountaineers, climbers, and nature lovers, and it serves as a starting point for trips to Velika Planina, Kamniško Sedlo, Grintovec, and other peaks. The valley is accessible by asphalt road from Kamnik, ending at the Kamniška Bistrica Lodge, where the valley gives way to the high mountains.

The first part of the trail follows the most scenic section of the Koželj Trail, alongside the crystal-clear waters of the Kamniška Bistrica River and through the Predaselj Gorge, where you can admire a natural chasm about 30 meters deep and over 100 meters long. After the floods of 2023, the Koželj Trail sustained some damage — bridges and sections of the trail were washed away — but restoration work was carried out. In 2024, the trail was named the best mountain trail, and with the support of the Alpine Association of Slovenia and sponsors, the bridges and damaged parts of the trail were rebuilt. The trail is named after Maks Koželj (1883–1956), a painter, mountaineer, and mountain rescuer from Kamnik.

The trail is circular and returns you to the starting point. The second part leads through Brsniki, where forests and open meadows intertwine, surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. The area features a characteristic alpine landscape with lush greenery and views of the surrounding cliffs.

The trail is generally rated as easy and suitable for hiking in all seasons. Even in summer, it offers pleasant shade and several spots for rest. However, please note that two of the geocaches along the trail are located in more challenging terrain, and that geocache #7 in particular requires a climbing rope and suitable equipment. The values for the bonus cache are distributed along the entire trail, so you will be able to collect them even if you do not find geocache #7.

Some parts of the trail can be slippery, so good hiking footwear and caution are recommended, especially after rain. Please also be aware that ticks are present in the area, so appropriate protection and a thorough check after your visit are advised. As mentioned, the trail is circular and takes a little over 3.5 hours to complete.

This cache was placed for the Kamnik 2025 Block Party event.
