The city of Dauphin was named after Lake Dauphin and Fort Dauphin, which were named by explorer Pierre Gaultier de La Verendrye in honor of the Dauphin of France, the heir to the French throne. Dauphin was established in 1898. Since then, it has grown to be the ninth largest community in the province of Manitoba. Dauphin is home to Canada's National Ukrainian Festival during the first weekend in August, and Countryfest, which is held at the end of June/beginning of July.
