Geocache Description:

Park Ranger #26 - The Three Little Pigs

6th cache in Schenley Park!!!   (1-10 in Highland Park, 11-20 in Frick Park)

Cache: You are looking for a regular sized Lock&Lock container. This cache can be accessed from Serpentine Drive (not open to motor vehicles), by walking up a steep hill or park along E Circuit RD (obey parking signs) and jump over the fairly short rock wall.

The Neill Log House is right across the road from GZ!

Built in 1795, the Neill Log House is the oldest log house in the City of Pittsburgh. It was built by a man named Robert Neill, who was a Revolutionary War veteran and a wagoner on the Nemacolin Trail. Him and his family likely squatted on the larger 262-acre tract of land before gaining official ownership and constructing the log house.

The log house signifies a new era in Pittsburgh’s history, when settlers began building permanent residences instead of temporary log cabins. The log house’s detailed features, such as logs hewed to join squarely, a wooden floor, and the addition of a loft, point to an abundance of time and attention when constructing the home.

Through the 19th century, the log house was likely rented out to tenant farmers who tended the surrounding land. Eventually, after a succession of different owners, the house ended up in the hands of Mary Schenley. In 1889, she donated this land, as well as selling additional acreage, to the City of Pittsburgh to create Schenley Park.

Since then, the Neill Log House has gone through multiple periods of disrepair, as well as periods of use as a rest stop for golfers and as an educational site. It officially reopened in November of 2024 and is now used to commemorate Pittsburgh's rich history and share this with visitors! Once again we will be doing "Cache In, Trash Out" on this find, so please do your Schenley Park Rangers a service by picking up one piece of trash on your way out of the park after getting your smiley face!
