Geocache Description:

You are standing around the corner of the former Limehouse Board of Works, a former local authority office for the old borough of Stepney.

Limehouse District Board of Works was built on White Horse Road. The building, erected between 1862 and 1864, was designed by the Board’s surveyor, CR Dunch, a ‘liberal interpretation of Italian Renaissance’ according to some sources.

Four years later, it handled a cholera outbreak in East London, producing pamphlets and public advice to battle the outbreak. Appropriately, after 1900 the building would house the Borough of Stepney’s Public Health Department.

The building is now owned by the Half Moon Young People's Theatre, a prominent Theatre for Young Audiences (YA) - one of the few examples in London that make work for young people. The theatre works extensively in the community of Tower Hamlets and bought the building outright with the support of Tower Hamlets council in the late 20th century.

Theatre historians can trace the history of the theatre to former sites under the same name in a former Methodist church in Bow Road (now a Weatherspoons) and in a former Synagogue in Alie Street, near Aldgate (now demolished).

The cache is on a quiet residential road. Will require tweezers and a pen to sign the log.
