The Saraya House
The Saraya building was the town hall of Safed during the Ottoman period. Ali, the eldest son of the 18th-century governor of the Galilee, Daher al-Omar, built the building, which was partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1837, and was later renovated by the Ottomans and turned into the building that is known today, which served as the center of their rule in the city and the region. Later, a second floor was added to the building and an impressive clock tower – one of the seven clock towers built in Israel.
During the British mandate in 1929, the city's Arabs carried out a horrific massacre of their Jewish neighbors, in which about 17 people were killed and more About 80 were wounded. The Jews of the quarter escaped under the protection of the British and were imprisoned in the Saraya building for their protection.
Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jews
The Museum of Hungarian-Speaking Jews was established in Safed at the initiative of the Joseph and Chava Lustig family and is located near the Saraya compound. The museum was opened in 1986, and it was established out of a commitment to bequeath to future generations the glorious heritage of the Hungarian-speaking Jewish communities that existed for about a thousand years in Hungary, Transylvania, Slovakia and Carpathian Russia, and numbered about a million people, many of whom perished in World War II. Alongside the exciting display, you can find here a huge archival and library collection and use advanced research tools for the purpose of researching family and community roots or for significant historical research.
