The land known as LEH Baigent Reserve was originally preserved for over 80 years through a covenant in the public domain and has been enjoyed by many thousands of people for picnics, BBQs and various water sports. Eventually the land was bought by Carter Holt Harvey who sometime after the sale decided it would be subdivided which caused considerable angst in the community, fortunately the Environment Court denied CHH's application.
The Tasman District Council bought the Baigent Reserve on the Kina Peninsula - with financial help from 140 families, spearheaded by the Tasman Area Community Association.
The reserve is closed at night.
