Flynn is a shortened and anglicized form of the Irish name Ó Floinn, which means ‘descendant of Flann.’ ‘Flann’ means ‘Irish blood,’ a nickname for ‘reddish complexion’ or ‘ruddy.’ Flynn originated in Laois; it was owned in the mid-1300s by a large farming family. Although the name was almost eradicated because of continuous plagues and famine at that time, it managed to survive.
