Geocache Description:

This is a microcache that only contains a logsheet and pencil. Please sign the log and your entry here, no need to leave trinkets.

This cache is well hidden and not noticable by non-cachers. Since this is a busy area, care must be taken to be discrete when searching.

This Lathe was donated to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) in 1936, which later became known as Auburn University. The lathe was built near Selma, AL during the War of Union Aggression and was used to bore gun barrels for the Confederate army. While en route to Columbus, GA, the Confederate Army buried it at Irondale, AL to prevent seizure. After the war, the lathe was used in Birmingham by the Birmingham Rolling Mills until they donated it to Auburn University. The lathe now sits between Samford and Langdon Hall.

Several of the cannons rifled with this lathe can be seen at the Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, GA. In fact, the Columbus Riverwalk microcache is located near the hill where one of the Brook rifled cannons overlooks the Chattahoochee.

For those not familiar with the 'Tradition' as it relates to the lathe, young co-eds that are about to graduate are suppose to walk by the lathe. Those that are ..uh.. 'purely' ladies will cause the lathe to spin. Check to see if it spins for you!
