Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES, and involves traveling down a steep incline into an obscure area.  Please observe the necessary tools attributes to come prepared to find this cache.

This is also a letterbox hybrid cache. Letterboxing is another outdoor activity in which people follow clues or a story (rather than just coordinates) to find a container and then put their mark in the logbook.  A letterbox hybrid, like this one, is both a geocache and a letterbox.  It can include both coordinates AND clues to get you to the final location. Follow the clues in the cache page to find the final cache location.  Please note:  This letterbox hybrid does not contain a stamp at the final.  It is log only, so BYOP.

To find the Ghost of Tom Joad, please begin at the posted coordinates.  They will take you to a designated marker bearing a title.  The title of this marker will be the area you will find the cache final container.

From the posted location, walk to the north/northwest for about 45 feet.  Please observe caution with your footing as the ground may be uneven and may contain some rough terrain.

At this secondary location, you will want to mark a waypoint.  From this new waypoint, turn 90 degrees to a north/northeast heading.  Walk for a distance of about 150 feet.  Your map and application may not work properly in the location you will be traversing, so use your good judgement about the distance.

When you believe you have walked for about 150 feet, turn to the southwest.  There you will find an area to explore for the Ghost of Tom Joad.  Keep in mind, if you need any additional clues, the song lyrics may yield more information...

The Ghost of Tom Joad (2000 song)

The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995 song)

Rage Against the Machine released a powerful rap-metal cover of Bruce Springsteen's folk song, "The Ghost of Tom Joad," in 1997. While Springsteen's 1995 original is a quiet, acoustic track, Rage Against the Machine's version is an aggressive, electric reinterpretation that amplifies the song's themes of social injustice.

  • Release date: The single was released on November 25, 1997.
  • Electrified anger: The band gave the song a "hard-driving grunge" sound, with guitarist Tom Morello's distinct effects and Zack de la Rocha's angry, spoken-word delivery.
  • Later re-recorded: The band released a new recording of the song on their 2000 covers album, Renegades.
  • Morello and Springsteen: Tom Morello joined Springsteen on several occasions to perform "The Ghost of Tom Joad".
  • Electric version on High Hopes: In 2013, Springsteen re-recorded the song with Morello for his 2014 album, High Hopes, using the powerful, electric arrangement.

Please bring your own writing utensil to sign the log for this cache and return everything back the way you found it.  Thank you!
