Welcome to Cancun!

Logging Requirements:

Before getting started, I'd like to provide you with the logging requirements and the questions and be prepared for what you must do to complete the requirements. Please send your answers to the CO but NOT in your log. Please take a picture of yourself at or near one of the groynes with your caching name in the picture and include in your log. If the pic is not included or your answers aren't sent, your log will sadly be deleted. The difficulty and terrain are a bit higher to compensate for the climbing of the groyne and for the extra questions.

at icon -  Access the public beach at the earthcache icon (there may be other ways to get to the public beach)

Stage 1 - Walk over to the larger groyne. Please be careful in climbing up and along the groyne. Walk about half way along and answer the questions.

Describe what kind of materials the groyne is made from (natural?, man-made?, both?  From which direction is the current flowing? Why is this big groyne here and why do you think it is so big?  Why is the groyne north of here so much smaller?  What side of the groyne can you see accretion (deposition) of sand? What side has no sand?

Stage 2 - Continue to walk to the end of the long groyne. What is found about 100 meters south of the groyne in the ocean?  How many of them can you see in the bay?  Why do you think they are there?

Stage 3 -  Walk over to the smaller groyne(s) to the south along the beach. How many are there?  What kind of material is the groyne made from? Why are these groynes here?

Introduction

Cancun is Mexico's premiere tourist destination seeing over 10 million tourists in both 2023 and 2024.1 In an article by Mark Stevenson 2 he discusses that Cancun's eroding beaches are a concern to the tourist destination.  As a result of several powerful hurricanes and building large hotels on shifting sand dunes on a narrow peninsula, the sand has been disappearing. Hotels built too tall and too heavy, and too close to the shore as well as coastal vegetation being stripped away to make them more tourist friendly have contributed to the massive erosion.

Much of Cancun's beaches disappeared after Category 4 Hurricane Wilma hit in 2005, leaving waves lapping against hotel foundations and rocks.3  To combat the increasing stronger hurricanes of the last two decades, millions of cubic meters of sand were dredged from the Carribean and pumped ashore in Cancun.4 The first attempt at beach restoration in 2006 cost $19 million.5  In 2009, an even costlier project created a 10 kilometer stretch of beach about 60 meters wide at a cost of $70 million.  Just a few years later, this sand was already starting to wash away. Other similar projects continue to add more sand as it washes away from similar storms.

What is longshore drift and what is the result?

Longshore drift from longshore current is a geological process that consists of transportation of coastal sediments parallel to the shoreline. As the current comes along at an angle to the coastline, the waves hit the shore and come back but at an angle that moves in the direction of the longshore drift. Longshore drift is simply the sediment moved by the longshore current. This current and the movement of the sediment occurs within the surf zone. The process is also known as littoral drift. 6   Beach sand will move along the shore due to the swash and backwash of the water on the beach. The sand can move along downbeach is a sawtooth fashion tens of metres in a day.  This is a natural geological process.

                                                                          6

How do ports and harbours affect Longshore Drift?

The creation of ports and harbours can seriously impact the natural course of longshore drift. Harbours can pose a threat to shoreline evolution as it alters the sedimentation patterns which can lead to accretion and erosion of a coastal beach. Instead of longshore drift transporting sediment north up the coast, the creation of the harbour may cause accretion to the south which prevents sediment from being deposited on the coast in the north.

What can be done to encourage beach sand formation?

One way coastal erosion is being managed is by installing artifical barriers along the shore. These barriers are called groynes. Groynes are being installed to combat the process of longshore drift which slowly moves the sand down current. To the north of the harbour are  several groynes that have been built to capture some of the sand from the longshore drift that flows from south to north in this area.

What is a groyne?

A groyne 7 is a structure extending from the shoreline and out to sea, most often perpendicular or slightly angled to the shoreline. The main function of a groyne is catching and trapping part of the sediment moving in a longshore direction in the surf zone. Groynes are usually made of wood, concrete or stone. Groynes are constructed so that currents are slowed down and material is kept in place and prevented from leaving the shore. In Cancun, the prevaling current is South to North. This means that constructing a groyne North of a beach will trap the sand from leaving that beach. It is likely also to prevent sand from appearing on the north side of the groyne.

Effects of groynes on the shoreline

The groyne is constructed to help mitigate long shore drift of sediment. The best way to do this is to put multiple groynes in an area.  The up current side of the groyne will accumulate sediment whereas the downstream side will lose sediment.  So if only one groyne is placed, the effect would become more sediment loss.

Features of groynes

There are many sizes, shapes and types of groynes and constructing the right one for the conditions is crucial for its effectiveness of shore protection. Groynes are most effective when they don't trap the whole longshore sediment flux. According to experts, the length of the groynes should not exceed 40-50% of the storm surf zone width. Also the effectiveness of groynes depends on their permeability. Groynes which are permeable or partially submerged allow more sediment to pass alongshore, compared to higher groynes.9

Types of groynes

Groynes can be made of wood, sheet-pile, concrete, rubble-mound (made of cement blocks or stones), and some are even made of sand bags. Groynes can also be constructed to be built above the average water level or below, they can be buit perpendicular, T-shaped or some angle like an inverse L.
