Kongens Nytorv er en af Københavns mest centrale pladser. Torvet er anlagt i 1670 af Christian V som del af en barok byudvidelse. Anlæggelsen af torvet flyttede byens centrum fra det gamle middelaldermarked Gammeltorv til et stenbelagt torv med parterrehave inspireret af franske pladsanlæg.
I torvets midte står en rytterstatue af Christian V – skabt af den franske billedhugger Abraham‑César Lamoureux i 1688 og indviet samme år. Den var oprindeligt i forgyldt bly, men blev støbt i bronze i årene 1939–1942 på grund af metaltræthed. Fire allegoriske figurer symboliserer dyd, styrke, forsigtighed og ære – inklusive en nøgen mand under hestens hove for at støtte konstruktionen.
Rundt om "Krinsen" - en ellipse af lindetræer og parterrer, findes flere af Københavns ældste og mest prominente bygninger: Charlottenborg Palæ (1671) nu hjemsted for Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Thotts Palæ (1683), som i dag huser den Franske Ambassade, og Magasin du Nord (1893–94), Københavns ældste stormagasin. Her ligger også det smukke Kongelige Teater bygget 1872‑74, inklusive Art Déco‑bygningen Stærekassen fra 1931.

Kongens Nytorv is one of the most central squares in Copenhagen. The square was established in 1670 by King Christian V as part of a Baroque city expansion. Its construction shifted the city’s center from the old medieval market Gammeltorv to a paved square with a parterre garden inspired by French urban design.
In the middle of the square stands an equestrian statue of Christian V – created by the French sculptor Abraham César Lamoureux in 1688 and inaugurated the same year. Originally made of gilded lead, it was cast in bronze between 1939 and 1942 due to metal fatigue. Four allegorical figures symbolize virtue, strength, prudence, and honor – including a naked man under the horse’s hooves to support the structure.
Surrounding the "Krinsen" - an ellipse of linden trees and parterres, are some of Copenhagen’s oldest and most prominent buildings: Charlottenborg Palace (1671), now home to Kunsthal Charlottenborg; Thott’s Mansion (1683), today housing the French Embassy; and Magasin du Nord (1893–94), Copenhagen’s oldest department store. The beautiful Royal Danish Theatre, built in 1872–74, is also located here, along with the Art Déco building Stærekassen from 1931.
