You’ve found a cache inspired by one of Florida’s coolest (and biggest!) bugs — the Florida lubber grasshopper! These jumbo jumpers can grow up to 4 inches long – that’s as big as your hand!
Also called giant lubbers or Eastern lubber grasshoppers, they’re super colorful with yellow, orange, and black markings. But don’t be fooled — they can’t fly and are terrible jumpers. Their defense? They hiss and spit yucky foam to scare predators away. Ew!
Fun fact: Some animals won’t eat them because they taste really gross. Lucky for the lubber!
