Check out a relic from the past! Sand Spring Trail, off the
Appalachian Trail, leads to The General (watch for signs, it’s well
marked). The cache is a stone's throw from the General and is only
2 miles east of Wishing and Ghost Town Cache. Shortest access is
via Cold Springs Trail (parking at the base) but a much nicer hike
is over the railroad bed or Appalachian rail from Goldmine road.
!! Please note that the coordinates and hint have changed!!
If you're up for a challenge, view the hint and do the
cache without a GPS (very easy with a trusty map and
compass!)
Most new topographic maps of the area mark The General and there
are signs on the Appalachian Trail (at the Sand Springs Trail
junction) and on Sand Spring trail marking it. So far I haven’t
been able to find it listed on any USGS quads. Without saying what
it is, it makes a neat playground although please be careful of the
metal-—much of it has rusted completely and is very brittle
(especially be careful with the kids if you decide to play around
it). The cache is not in or on the General. If
anyone knows any history about The General please pass it on! Be
sure to check out Wishing and Ghost Town Cache while you’re in the
area (if you come if from Goldmine, you’ll pass both on the way to
The General). Stony Mountain Stash is also very close and is
historically very interesting.
The hiding spot is now significantly better than before (it would
uncover itself in the old spot); please take great care when
rehiding.
