Geocache Description:

This is a mystery cache, so at the posted coordinates there is nothing to be found. In order to find the cache you need to find the answers to the questions below.

In Geocaching the Åland islands count as a country. In reality the islands are part of Finland, but have a large degree of independence. Whereas Finland is an officially bilingual country with both Finnish and Swedish as official languages, Åland is not. The only official language of Åland is Swedish.

For me the islands are special since that is where I started my career as a teacher, in 1986. I hope you will enjoy learning a bit more about Åland by finding the answers to the following questions.

1. About 85% of the inhabitants speak Swedish as a mother tongue, and 4,5% speak Finnish. But which is the third most spoken language as a mother tongue?

2. A Russian fortress on Åland was destroyed after a battle. Today the ruins are an important tourist attraction (and a nice place for geocaching!) What was the name of the fortress, and what year did the battle take place?

3. There are many ferries that connect Åland to Sweden, mainland Finland and Estonia. The quickest route from Sweden leaves from which Swedish port?

4. What is the name of the tallest mountain on Åland? (Romanians would probably not consider it to be a mountain)

5. When Finland became independent after World War I most people on Åland wanted the islands to be part of Sweden instead of Finland. However, the League of Nations decided that Åland would be an independent part of Finland, with its own parliament. What is the name of this parliament today? (Ålands X)

6. Åland has its own postal service and issues stamps. This year (2025) Ålands post has issued a series of franking labels with a maritime theme. One of them shows a fish. What is the Swedish name of this fish?

7. Åland consists of 16 municipalities (kommuner in Swedish). One of them is the smallest in Finland with only about 100 inhabitants. What is it called?

8. One of the main sights of the capital of Åland, Mariehamn, is a sailing ship built in 1903, that now is part of Åland maritime museum. What is the name of the ship, and what was its previous name before it was renamed.

To receive the coordinates of the cache you need to enter the correct replies into Certitude. The replies should be written without spaces. It does not matter if you use capital letters or not.
