Geocache Description:

A driving/walking tour of historical markers/places in the city of Winnemucca, NV. It is six stops long with simple questions you can answer from the car in a few cases or with a short walk to the coordinates. All of the coordinates were taken with a Magellan Meridian Platinum auto-averaging for a minute or two also averaged against a Garmin Vista and Summit (having fun playing with my two gps's and my brother's).

This cache begins at the coordinates listed above (N 40* 58.375, W 117* 43.905) at a marker commemorating the part of Winnemucca which was once known as Chinatown. Look for the sign and answer this question:

1. Which Chinese president visited Winnemucca's Chinatown in 1911?

Next, go to N 40* 58.335, W 117* 44.006. This location has a stone given to the city to acknowledge the trade between this area and the coast. Your question:

2. On what date (Gregorian calendar, please) was the stone dedicated?

The third stop is one of the most famous in Winnemucca, and you may have even seen it on a few billboards on the way in (They say "Butch Cassidy left here rich, so can you!"). Go to N 40* 58.372, W 117* 44.041 and you will see the bank that is reputed to have been held up by Butch and his gang on September 9, 1900. The question you must answer is:

3. What was the name of the bank located here beginning in 1886?

The fourth stop is somewhat related to the second. At N 40* 58.383, W 117* 44.143 you will find a large monument to the Winnemucca to the Sea trade route. Also note that behind the monument, nestled in the corner between the two buildings of the convention center (one of which used to be a casino) there once stood a very beautiful opera house - The Nixon Opera house. Unfortunately it was destroyed by arson in the 1990s and a great historical treasure was forever lost. But back to the cache...from the information on the monument tell me:

4. How old is the item that lies at the coordinates?

The next, and penultimate stop on your tour is at N 40* 58.480, W. 117* 44.195. This recently restored building gives a good idea of what the main street of Winnemucca may have looked like in the pioneer days of the town's past. From the sign near the bank answer:

5. What year is on the sign noting the year the bank was established?

The final stop on your incomplete tour of the city (for more historical information please see the visitor's center or the museum located up US 95, across the river) is located at N 40* 58.500, W 117* 44.226. This fine establishment was first opened in 1863 and has served many a patron in the years since. Although you don't need to answer any questions for this stop, please go on in and enjoy the traditional Basque cooking and/or the libations. Take note of the beautifully carved bar, and feel free to get the story from the barkeep. If you do stop for a drink, I suggest the picon punch - but if you haven't had it before, be ready for the PUNCH part, it's got a kick.

Please email me your answers. I will only reply if your answers are incorrect. Please don't post the answers in your log as that will spoil others' journeys through the town. Enjoy your tour of Winnemucca!
