What day is National Ice Cream Day celebrated? Third Sunday in July, i.e. July 22, 2018, July 21, 2019, July 26, 2020. July is also National Ice Cream Month.

What is National Ice Cream Day? National Ice Cream Day is a day to celebrate one of our favorite desserts. According to President Ronald Reagan who issued the Presidential Proclamation for this day, “ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food.”

Who created this day? National Ice Cream Day was created on May 17, 1984, by Congressional Joint resolution 298, and sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky. The resolution proclaimed the entire month of July 1984 as “National Ice Cream Month” and designated July 15, 1984, as “National Ice Cream Day.” President Ronald Reagan signed it into law on July 9, 1984 under Presidential Proclamation 5219.

Even though the Proclamation only stated the year 1984, gleeful fans of ice cream have continued to celebrate National Ice Cream Day each July 9. Ice cream makers also promote it annually.

How to celebrate: There are many ways to celebrate National Ice Cream Day. The simplest is to eat a bowl of your favorite ice cream alone or with a friend or family. You might even consider making homemade ice cream, or pop out to your favorite ice cream store for a treat. Many stores also offer free or discounted ice cream on this day, so check online for any deals so that you can best celebrate an iconic bowl of ice cream.
