Marmura este o varietate de calcar. Fiind o roca de apa sarata, carierele de marmura se gasesc in apropierea marii, dar mai există şi excepţii în care carierele se află la distanta de mare.
Proprietățile fizice generale ale marmurei:
Printre proprietarile fizice ale marmurei se numara si duritatea, densitatea, compresiunea etc. Majoritatea marmurelor (cu foarte putine exceptii) au urmatoarele caracteristici:
Duritate : 3 - 4 pe scala Mohs
Densitate : 2.55 - 2.7 Kg/cm⊃3;
Rezistenta la compresiune : 70 - 140 N/mm⊃2;
Modul de ruptura :12 - 18 N/mm⊃2;
Absorbtia de apa : mai putin de 0,5%
Porozitate: foarte scazută
Din punct de vedere al proprietatilor chimice, marmurele sunt roci cristaline compuse in principal din calcit, dolomita sau serpentină, impreuna cu alte componente minore care variaza de le origine la origine.
Marmura se formeaza din calcar care isi modifica proprietatile fizice sub actiunea temperaturilor si presiunilor ridicate din scoarta terestra. Aceste procese determina calcarul sa-si schimbe textura si aspectul, proces numit recristalizare. Mineralele rezultate din impuritati dau marmurei o mare varietate de culori. Marmura cea mai pura din punct de vedere al calcitului este cea de culoare alba.
