Geocache Description:

There is no cache at the co-ordinates provided. The correct co-ordinates can be discovered by answering the questions below, and using the numbers at the relevant places in the formula. You will find some of the answers at the co-ordinates provided, and the rest at Waypoint 1.

This multi is something of an adjunct to my “Nile River” series of caches in Gregory Hills and (currently under development-) here in Oran Park. If you want to make more sense of that statement, see the description for GCB2PFQ, the first cache in that series.

You cannot live in Sydney’s southwest for too long without coming across some plaque, sculpture or other work of ‘art’, street name or soccer team which reflects the bovine history of the area. For the 3 of you who don’t know what I’m talking about …

When the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788, a small number of cattle had been obtained en route at the Cape of Good Hope to assist with the establishment of of the new colony. However, in the first few months, two bulls and five cows wandered off, and were not seen again until 1795, when a pair of convicts, sent out to hunt for food, came across a herd of cattle in the region of South Creek, now numbering over 40. Follow-up investigations eventually discovered other herds of varying sizes, eventually (by 1801) totalling between 500 & 600 head, as well as pastures that were (obviously) very suited to the grazing of cattle and other livestock.

Because of the wandering nature of the herds, the comparatively extensive grazing area found as a result of their discovery, and the long meandering course of South Creek, from (what is now) Gregory Hills to its eventual emergence to join the Hawkesbury just downstream of Windsor, there are numerous communities in the west and southwest of Sydney that, in some way celebrate a link to these animals.

Here in Oran Park there are several bronze statues forming a small metallic ‘herd’ in Perich Park, opposite the council chambers and library. Less well known is another bovine pair a short distance away (Waypoint 1) This second pair are a little more separated from one another.

At the Provided Co-ordinates in Perich Park ...

Count up the number of horns. The answer is a two digit number.

Let the second of these digits = A

Let the sum of these digits = B

Count the number of animals looking fully sideways (ie don’t include those whose gaze is just slightly off-centre). Let the number = C

Let the number of udders = D

Let the total number of animals = E

At Waypoint 1

Let the total number of spots on the animals = F

Count the total number of hooves that are flat against the ground. Divide the result by 2. Let the answer = G
