This cache is about 2 miles from the end (as of 2025) of the Great Sauk Trail. Eventually, the plan is the trail will run all the way to Devil's Lake State Park. There are a number of artistic works along the trail.
If you bike or hike from the closest parking lot to the cache, look to your right at the ridge rising up on the other side of the railroad. This is the Baraboo Hills, a remnant of a mountain range that millions of years ago was higher than the Rocky Mountains. It is made of Baraboo quartzite, a reddish, hard rock that resisted erosion by the glaciers that covered much of southern Wisconsin. Keep your eye out for pieces of this rock along the trail.
Hikers do not need a trail pass. Bicyclists and inline skaters 16 years or older are required to have a State trail pass in order to use the trail. Trail passes are available at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/admission/trailpass.
