Ştiaţi că: Prima atestare documentară a Ţării Haţegului (Terra Harszoc)) apare în Diploma Ioaniţilor din anul 1247. Ȋn 1276 aflăm de un n obil haţegan, numit comes de Haczek. Un alt nobil, Nicolaus de Hatzek este atestat la 1317. Alte atestări: Hatzag (1349), villa Hatzak (1360), civitas Hachzak (1366), Hathzak (1380).
Numele poate veni din maghiară, de la hat-szék, adică „șase scaune de judecată”, înțeles ca „districtul celor șase scaune”, ori de la hát-szeg, „cetatea de pe vârful din spate”.
O altă ipoteză: harszoc ar veni de la cuvântul hârs, care în limba cumană înseamnă „urs”
În 1765, localitatea a fost militarizată în întregime și a făcut parte din Compania a II-a de graniță a Regimentului I de Graniţă de la Orlat până în 1851, când a fost desființat.
Oraşul Haţeg are o populaţie de aproape 10000 de locuitori şi este centrul ținutului istoric și etnografic al Ţării Haţegului..
