Geocache Description:

A new adventure from the folks of the Mahoning River Water Trail Conservancy to explore local waterways by kayak.

The Mahoning -derived from Native American word meaning “at the lick” or “at the salt lick” potentially referring to salt or mineral deposits once nearby, is a small river about 113 miles long starting in Columbia Co Ohio and ending in Lawerence Co Pa.  It joins the Beaver River in PA and eventually goes on to the Ohio River.  Efforts to clean and restore the Mahoning River have been ongoing, reflecting environmental awareness, and through community initiatives, improving the water quality, and ecosystem health.

Caches are all preforms, and the first section of the trail is mostly on the left-hand side while the second portion is majority on the right side. As expected, most will be placed somewhere on a tree. When available, placement may vary due to location of interest.

Please do not throw down containers if you believe it to be missing.  Log a DNF and we will come replace. ALWAYS bring a writing utensil and sign the log.

Starting in Struthers, Ohio you can choose several different boat access points for completion. Boat access points listed below. The newest section of MRWT is approximately 3 miles and ends at Lowellville. However, you can continue on an additional 8 miles to McKinney boat access in Newcastle Pa.

It took us approximately 4 hours to place 25 geocaches. Plan your paddle accordingly, floatation devices, dry storage for phones, phone chargers, sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water are recommended.

This portion of the Mahoning River is no where near white water 🌊only rated class I and II, however be mindful of the elements ⛈️before setting afloat. Links below can help with decision making.
