Sydney bound XPT approaching the Railway Viewing Platform
About SideTracked Caches
SideTracked Caches are a series probably familiar to anyone that has been caching in the United Kingdom. SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick Cache-and-dashes at Train Stations... a distraction for the weary traveller. And of course, anyone else can go and find them too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.
About SideTracked Events
Every year in the UK, SideTracked Events have been held on 10th August (SideTracked Day) to celebrate the series... and this year is the 18th Anniversary.
About This Event
After last year's fantastic event held at Diamond Valley Railway... which would never have happened without the incredible support of Geocaching Victoria... the obvious question is "How do you top that?" Quite frankly, the answer is "You don't" so I am not going to even try.
This year's event is quite low key in comparison... no trains to ride, no games, no food, no drinks (unless you BYO), no seats and no shelter (you have been warned). The year the event is being held at the Railway Viewing Platform located in Railway Place, West Melbourne... a few minutes walk from North Melbourne railway station.
The platform was launched back in 1994 by Michael Leunig when Southern Cross was called its proper name... Spencer Street Station... and country trains were proper trains of carriages hauled by locomotives. Back then there was lots to be seen from the viewing platform... but not so much these days. The event has been timed so we get at least one passing train... the Sydney XPT that whistles out of Southern Cross at 0830... so don't be late.
