The private, non-profit Museum of Perth opened in October 2015 and chronicles the social, cultural, political and architectural history of Perth. Prior to this, it existed as a "virtual museum" on the (former) Twitter platform.
The Museum was originally located here in Grand Lane, whose name relates to the former Grand Theatre which used to occupy a prominent site on the south-western side of the laneway. Grand Lane was upgraded in 2011 as part of the City's laneways enhancement strategy and features a series of artwork along the length of the lane including a 99-metre mural on the western wall.
In 2016 the Museum of Perth moved to the Atlas Building on The Esplanade, and then to the Bon Marche Arcade building in Barrack Street. The Museum is currently located in a former telephone exchange building at 410 Murray Street. It is open Monday to Saturday
10:00am to 4:00pm (free entry) and is well worth a look.
The orginal Museum of Perth sign can still be seen high up on the eastern wall of Grand Lane.
