Hongxing (红星: Red Star) Hutong is located on the east side of Dongdan North Street, running east-west. It was originally 724 meters long, 8 meters wide, and had an asphalt road surface.
Hongxing Hutong belonged to Huanghuafang in the Ming Dynasty and was called "Wuliang (吴良) Daren Hutong". In the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to the Bordered White Banner and was renamed "Wuliang (无量) Daren Hutong", allegedly because there was a Wuliang Temple in the hutong. When Beijing rectified place names in 1965, Guanfang Courtyard was incorporated and renamed "Hongxing Hutong". During the Cultural Revolution, it was once renamed "Ruijin Road 14", and later restored to "Hongxing Hutong". Mei Lanfang, a famous Peking Opera actor, once lived at No. 5 Wuliang Daren Hutong (i.e. No. 11 Hongxing Hutong). At the end of the 20th century, there were units such as the China Photographers Association in Hongxing Hutong, and the rest were residential buildings.
At the beginning of the 21st century, due to the construction of Jinbao Street, Hongxing Hutong was cut into two sections from the middle. In 2009, the China Photographers Association moved from No. 61 Hongxing Hutong to No. 48 Dong 42nd Street. This was the first relocation of the China Photographers Association since its establishment, and it bid farewell to No. 61 Hongxing Hutong, which had been its office location since 1958.
