Geocache Description:

1988 m. Sąjūdžio metu aikštėje vyko žmonių susibūrimai. Atkūrus nepriklausomybę pervadinta Lauryno Stuokos-Gucevičiaus vardu. Vyksta miesto šventės ir renginiai, 1997–2015 m. vyko tarptautinio folkloro festivalio „Lingaudala“ atidarymo koncertai.

2017 m. gale aikštė uždaryta rekonstrukcijai, o paminklas architektui Laurynui Stuokai-Gucevičiui perkeltas prie L. Stuokos Gucevičiaus gimnazijos.

The square has been an important market and trade place since the very beginning of the city's development. The village center, a hotel, and three taverns stood nearby. During the interwar period, it was called Turgaus, and after the second Soviet occupation period, it was called Tarybų aikšte. During the maintenance of the square, in accordance with Soviet ideology, in 1948–1949, most of the old houses were demolished, and the first Soviet apartment buildings were built in their place. On November 11, 1955, a bust of Stalin was unveiled in the square, which remained until 1962. After a new place was designated for markets, the square lost its purpose; after reconstruction during the Soviet era, it became representative.

In 1988, during the Sąjūdis movement, people gathered in the square. After the restoration of independence, it was renamed after Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius. City festivals and events are held, and in 1997–2015 the opening concerts of the international folklore festival "Lingaudala" were held.

At the end of 2017, the square was closed for reconstruction, and the monument to architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius was moved to the L. Stuoka Gucevičius Gymnasium.
