Kupos pavadinimas siejamas su lietuvių kalbos žodžiais kupana (kuokšta, sruoga), kupeta (didelė krūva), kupti (iškilti) arba latvių kalbos žodžiu kupt, reiškiančiu krešėti, rūgti, gižti.
Tarmiškai „kūpėti“ reiškia smarkiai bėgti, kunkuliuoti – srautinga Kupa smarkiai teka per pavasario polaidžius.
Istorija
Istoriniuose šaltiniuse pirmą kartą paminėta 1574 m. ryšium su Pienionių seniūnijos žemių permatavimu ties Dievelionių (dabar Plundakai) kaimu. XVI-XIX a. pagal upę driekėsi Kuosėnų vaitijos kaimų laukai. Upė iki XIX a. pab. buvo labai žuvinga. Ypač gausu buvo būdavo vėžių, gyveno ūdros. Prieš 1914 m. Kupiškyje prie upės planuota statyti garinį malūną, 1950 m. ties ligonine buvo pastatyta užtvanka, o šalia įrengtas paplūdimys. Po kelerių metų (neatlaikius vandens slėgio) užtvanka nugriuvo.
The name of the Kupa is associated with the Lithuanian words kupana (tuft, strand), kupeta (large pile), kupti (raised) or the Latvian word kupt, meaning to curdle, ferment, boil.
In dialect, "kūpēti" means to run violently, to boil - the flowing Kupa flows violently during spring floods.
History
It was first mentioned in historical sources in 1574 in connection with the re-surveying of the lands of the Pienioniai eldership near the village of Dievelioniai (now Plundakai). In the 16th-19th centuries, the fields of the villages of the Kuosėnai vaitija stretched along the river. Until the end of the 19th century, the river was very rich in fish. Crayfish were especially abundant, and otters lived there. Before 1914, a steam mill was planned to be built by the river in Kupiškis, in 1950 a dam was built near the hospital, and a beach was built nearby. After a few years (unable to withstand the water pressure), the dam collapsed.
