The Second Branch of Wulixue Canal — A Hidden Stream of Taipei's Past 霧裡薛圳第二支線遺址

This is the place where I found my very first cache back in 2019. Years have passed, and the original cache has unfortunately been archived. So I’ve chosen to hide my first cache here, not just for the memory, but because this place is rich in historical value.

這是我 2019 年玩 Geocaching 的時候，找到第一個 cache 的地方。
轉眼過了好多年，原本的 cache 已經被 archive 了，因此我決定將我的第一個藏寶點設置在這裡，畢竟這裡也是一個富有歷史意義的隱密小角落。

Wulixue Canal — The Oldest Canal in Taipei 臺北最古老的水圳

Many people have heard of the Liugong Canal (瑠公圳), but the Wulixue Canal (霧裡薛圳) is far less known — likely because most of it is now gone. (When I was young, I even thought this section was part of the Liugong Canal!)

許多人都聽過瑠公圳，但對霧裡薛圳可能比較陌生——因為如今大部分圳道已不復存在（我小時候還曾經以為這一段是瑠公圳的一部分!）。

However, the Wulixue Canal is actually the oldest documented irrigation canal in the Taipei Basin, dating back to 1724, and was designated a Municipal Historic Site in May 2025.

然而，霧裡薛圳其實是臺北盆地最早有興建紀錄的水圳，可追溯至清雍正二年（1724年）。為表彰其歷史價值，霧裡薛圳已於 2025 年 5 月被臺北市正式指定為市定古蹟。

The Meaning Behind the Name 名稱的由來與族群背景

The name Wulixue Canal (霧裡薛圳) came from Wulixue Creek (霧裡薛溪), now known as the Jingmei River (景美溪). The term “Wulixue” comes from the Pingpu indigenous language, meaning “Beautiful.” The area was home to the Shioulang (秀朗社) and Wulixue (霧裡薛社) tribes of the Pingpu people.

霧裡薛圳得名於景美溪的舊稱「霧裡薛溪」。「霧裡薛」源自平埔族語，意為「美麗的」，因此這條水流也被視為「美麗之河」。此流域過去為平埔族秀朗社與霧裡薛社聚落所在地。

The Story of Construction 興建背後的故事

When Han Chinese settlers moved into Taipei, tenant farmers attempted to divert water from the Wulixue Creek to irrigate their farmlands. However, due to a funding shortage during construction, ten members of the Zhou family pooled resources — forming seven shares of investment — to complete the canal. For this reason, the Wulixue Canal was also called Zhou Seven-Share Canal (周七股圳).

當漢人進入臺北墾殖時，佃農希望引霧裡薛溪水灌溉農田。然而在興建過程中，因經費不足，十位周姓人士出資組成七股，才得以完工。因此霧裡薛圳又有「周七股圳」之稱。

Because the water was mainly used to irrigate the Neihu Village (內湖庄) in Wenshan Fort (文山堡), the canal was also once called Neihu Pi (內湖陂).

由於水源灌溉的是文山堡內湖庄的田地，霧裡薛圳也曾被稱作「內湖陂」。

Urban Transformation and Preservation 都市化下的保留一隅

With Taipei’s rapid urbanization, most sections of the canal were either buried or converted into underground drains. Today, only a few fragments remain — including this rare open-air stretch.

隨著都市發展，大多數圳道已被填平或改為暗溝。如今僅存的露天區段極為稀少，而這裡就是其中之一。
