Garden of Amsterdam GeoTour – Gooi & Vecht
Het avontuur dat GeoTour heet, begon ergens in 2013 toen VVV Gooi en Vecht goede berichten had gehoord over geocaching en zij het een goed idee vonden om via plaatselijke geocachers, wat mooie geocaches in de regio te plaatsen om zo het toerisme te bevorderen.
Als eerste werd het GeoGamePark bij Natuurmonumenten in ’s Graveland opgezet met hulp van het bezoekerscentrum aldaar.
Het zou de opstap worden voor een veel groter project, de GeoTour. Het is een concept dat in de markt gezet wordt door Groundspeak, het moederbedrijf achter geocaching.com en is met name gericht op toeristische organisaties en bedrijfsleven, om het toerisme door middel van geocaching te bevorderen. Voor een betaalde licentie zorgt Groundspeak voor promotie op de site en verzamelt allerlei statistische data. Op die manier kunnen VVV’s zien hoeveel toerisme er op af komt. Omdat ongeveer per land bekend is wat toeristen gemiddeld per dag besteden is vrij goed te bepalen of de investering terugverdiend kan worden.
De licensie werd voor drie jaar getekend en vijf teams t.w. ASS3755, DaMiZoDa, roppio, The lucky finders (TLF) en zonnebaars plaatsten tezamen 24 mooi verzorgde caches op bijzondere locaties in de regio.
Uiteindelijk ging de (eerste) geotour van Nederland op 16 april 2015 "online" en het werd meteen duidelijk dat de caches goed bezocht werden door ook veel geocachers uit het buitenland die speciaal onze regio hadden uitgekozen om de tour te gaan doen. Dat er ook nog een fraaie geocoin als beloning voor een vol paspoort tegenover stond, heeft vast ook meegeholpen.
5 jaar verder in 2020 werd er nog eens drie jaar verlengd en de GeoTour flink uitgebreid naar 60 Geocaches en kwamen Bmihs, Firefarmer en Hewo de gelederen versterken en ASS3755 verliet de groep.
De nieuwe caches waren multi’s, letterboxen, mystery’s, een wherigo en een nachtcache waarbij er gewandeld, gefietst en gevaren kan worden.
Zo biedt de GeoTour in de huidige opzet voor elk wat wils, zowel voor de beginner als de doorgewinterde geocacher. Fietsen door de bossen en heide van het Gooi, flaneren door rustieke dorpjes, of geniet van een ontspannen kanotocht in de Vuntus bij de Loosdrechtse Plassen.
In 2025 bestaat de (eerste) Geotour van Nederland inmiddels 10 jaar en dat valt samen met 25 jaar Geocaching en dat mag natuurlijk best gevierd worden.

The adventure known as GeoTour began sometime in 2013 when the Gooi en Vecht Tourist Information Office (VVV) heard good things about geocaching and thought it would be a good idea to place some beautiful geocaches in the region through local geocachers to promote tourism.The first initiative was the GeoGamePark at Natuurmonumenten in 's-Graveland, with the help of the visitor center there.
This would be the stepping stone for a much larger project, the GeoTour. It's a concept marketed by Groundspeak, the parent company behind geocaching.com, and is primarily aimed at tourism organizations and businesses, promoting tourism through geocaching. For a paid license, Groundspeak promotes the site and collects various statistical data. This allows tourist offices to track the volume of tourism. Because the average daily tourist spend per country is known, it's fairly easy to determine whether the investment can be recouped.
The three-year license was signed, and five teams—ASS3755, DaMiZoDa, roppio, The Lucky Finders (TLF), and zonnebaars—collectively placed 24 beautifully maintained caches at unique locations in the region.
Finally, the (first) Geotour of the Netherlands went online on April 16, 2015, and it was immediately clear that the caches were well-attended, including by many geocachers from abroad who had specifically chosen our region for the tour. The fact that a nice geocoin was offered as a reward for a full passport undoubtedly contributed as well.
Five years later, in 2020, the GeoTour was extended for another three years and significantly expanded to 60 geocaches. Bmihs, Firefarmer, and Hewo joined the ranks, and ASS3755 left the group.
The new caches included multi's, letterboxes, mysteries, a wherigo, and a nightcache suitable for walking, cycling, and boating.
In its current format, the GeoTour offers something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned geocachers. Cycle through the forests and heathlands of the Gooi region, stroll through rustic villages, or enjoy a relaxing canoe trip in the Vuntus near the Loosdrechtse Plassen.
In 2025, the (first) Geotour in the Netherlands will have been around for 10 years, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Geocaching, which is definitely worth celebrating.
