Geocache Description:

📍St Peter’s Church War Memorial

Just outside the former St Peter’s Church on Tewkesbury Road is a graceful memorial honoring the 134 men of the parish who did not return from the First World War. Built from Cotswold limestone, its octagonal shaft and plinth support a simple stone cross, with sunken name panels listing the fallen.

On the eastern panel is the inscription:

LEST WE FORGET 1914‑1919
GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS

At the top, a bronze laurel wreath provides a subtle decorative touch, symbolizing sacrifice and remembrance.

The memorial was officially unveiled on 10 October 1920, and its community funding included parades and floral events, reflecting deep local involvement. Designed by Leonard W. Barnard and carved by H. H. Martyn & Co., it reflects distinguished craftsmanship.

After years of neglect, careful conservation was carried out in 1998, with further restoration in 2018 funded by the War Memorials Trust and local groups, ensuring the names remain legible and the stone preserved.

IMPORTANT!! Caches are not allowed to be placed on memorials themselves!

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Just-Us-Two know first at justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
