Wotherspoon Park is a small community park behind the main street and shopping precinct of Beaufort.
It has an enclosed playground, covered BBQ facilities, picnic tables and public toilets.
It was named after John Wotherspoon, who was the first secretary of the newly formed Riponshire Council back in 1858. A bust and plaque commemorating his service can be found in the lawns out the front of the Golden Age Hotel, near the Memorial Park.
Wotherspoons were also a huge name in Beaufort in the late 1800s and early 1900s, owning a chain of department stores along the main street of Beaufort, catering for clothing, boots & shoes, millinery & mantle, drapery, groceries, wine & spirits, and hardware. They were also hay and grain merchants.
If you look closely around the park grounds, you will find a short section of railway track. This was once where an old Steam Locomotive D3-641 once stood. Constructed in 1915 and moved to Wotherspoon Park upon finishing service in 1964, it was purchased by West Coast Railway and removed from the park in 2004. It now resides in the Steamrail Victoria yards in their Ballarat East depot.
