Formation d'un chaos rocheux / Formation of a rock chaos
In geomorphology, a chaos of blocks—or balls or sea of blocks in the case of felsenmeer—refers to a landform created by the erosion of blocks or rocks. These formations are part of the products of weathering, such as tors (rocks at the summit or on the slope of an interfluve), unlike chaos at the bottom of a valley or a field of boulders at the foot of a rocky cliff.
Several types of phenomena contribute to the formation of rock chaos:
- On slopes, debris accumulations (in the geomorphological sense) vary in size and shape and correspond to mass rockfalls, scree slopes, cones, mass slides, boulder fields, and isolated boulders.
- At summit locations, weathering under certain conditions produces boulder fields.

Granitic chaos evolves as a result of crystallization and deep cooling of a granitic intrusion, creating a network of mainly orthogonal shrinkage faults at depth: these joints then break up the intrusive granite into parallelepiped blocks.
When erosion of the surrounding softer rocks exposes the granite pluton, surface water erodes this granite massif. Deep erosion hydrolyzes feldspars into clays, which breaks down granite into granite sand, while surface erosion by water seeping into crevices of varying widths eventually causes the rock to break apart.

This tertiary “decay” (arenization) followed by quaternary frost fracturing leads to the formation of parallelepiped blocks of granite that continue to erode in an “onion skin” pattern (flaking). This results in stones of all sizes, stone balls that sometimes end up piling up on top of each other in precarious balances or separating completely and accumulating to form a granite chaos in the shape of a “fortress,” while the sliding of the blocks on the slopes forms “slope chaos.”
L'Elez creuse dans les roches / The Elez digs into the rocks

The Elez has its source in Yeun Elez, and it was in this sinister place that the mountain dwellers of Arrée once believed the gates of Hell opened onto one of the peat bogs called Youdig. More likely, the name means “dark water” or “dark wave” in Breton, according to Onésime Reclus: the same name is also borne by the Ellé, sometimes also spelled Elez or Ellez, a river that flows through Le Faouët.
At the outlet of Yeun Elez, the Elez meanders for 6 km before reaching the Saint-Herbot reservoir. On this section, the Elez's slope is relatively gentle: it drops from 219 m at the outlet of Lake Saint-Michel to 210 m at the entrance to the Saint-Herbot reservoir. A little further downstream, towards the Saint-Herbot reservoir, there is another rocky chaos, but it is much less accessible than that of Mardoul. Here, the natural course of the Elez is marked by a very steep slope with a drop of more than 100 m, forming the Saint-Herbot waterfall.

The subsoil of the Yeun Elez depression consists of schist, while the ridges surrounding the depression to the north, west, and south are made up of very resistant rocks (sandstone and quartzite). The eastern part is occupied by Huelgoat granite.
Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery
Question 1: Go to the coordinates of this EarthCache to observe the largest rock, with your back to the river. It may be hidden by vegetation. Based on what you can see on site and the information provided in the description of this EarthCache, can you tell whether this rock is the result of a “castle” formation or a “slope chaos”? Can you describe the size of this boulder in relation to the other boulders in the valley?
Question 2: At Waypoint 2 (approximately N 48° 20.469' W 003° 49.878', given the difficulty of the GPS to fix its position near water and rocks), you can see the outlines of vats used for washing linen, carved out of granite boulders. Are these rock blocks and their neighbors the result of a “fortress” formation or a “slope chaos”? What element is present here and not at Waypoint 1 that is currently eroding the rock blocks?
