🇭🇷 Krška obala u blizini Pule

🧭 Uvod
Kristen (mali žljebovi i brazde nastale kemijskim trošenjem)
Erozija valovima i prskanjem
Ponekad se u vapnencu mogu otkriti čak i fosili.
Ovdje krajolik karakterizira i mehanička i kemijska erozija, uglavnom uzrokovana kišnicom, morskom vodom i vjetrom.
📸 EarthCache zadaci

🇺🇸 Karst Coast near Pula

🧭 Introduction
This beautiful bay south of Pula is a striking example of the interplay of water, wind, and rock in a karst coastal landscape. The coast is primarily composed of limestone, formed over time by erosion and weathering.
🪨 Geological Background
You are in the Istrian Karst, which consists primarily of limestone from the Cretaceous period. These rocks have been folded and fractured by tectonic activity and exhibit many typical karst features:
Fissures and joints (visible in the rock surface)
Kristen (small solution grooves and furrows formed by chemical weathering)
Erosion by waves and spray
Sometimes even fossils can be discovered in the limestone.
The landscape here is characterized by both mechanical and chemical erosion, mainly caused by rainwater, seawater, and wind.
📸 EarthCache Tasks
To log this EarthCache, go to the given coordinates and observe the surrounding area. Answer the following questions based on your observations and email them to me.
📌 Logging Questions
1. Describe the structure of the rock you are standing on.
Do you see any cracks, joints, or undulating layers? In what direction do they run?
2. Look closely at the surface of the limestone.
Can you see any small grooves, holes, or sharp-edged patterns? How do you think these features were formed?
3. Observe the cliff on the opposite side of the bay.
Can you see any signs of erosion or erosion zones? What might have caused them?
4. What is karst weathering and why does it often occur in limestone regions?
→ Tip: Consider what happens when rainwater absorbs CO₂ and forms a weak acid.

Take a photo of yourself (or your GPS device) at the site with the coast in the background.
ℹ️ Note
Please be careful when walking on the rocks – they can be slippery or have sharp edges.
