đ° A Brief History of the Green
Lady Woottonâs Green is named after Lady Margaret Wootton, a noblewoman who once lived nearby in St Augustineâs Abbey during the Tudor era, she was the widow of Edward, Lord Wootton. Today, it forms a quiet gateway between the city and the remains of the Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Itâs a place where past and present meet â and perfect for hiding secrets in plain sightâŚ
đ Who Were the Watchers?
The statues you can see if you walk a little further are of King Ethelbert of Kent and his wife, Queen Bertha â two of the most influential figures in early English Christianity.

-
Queen Bertha, a Christian Frankish princess, came to Kent in the 6th century and brought her faith with her. She persuaded her husband to allow Christian missionaries into the kingdom.
-
King Ethelbert, inspired by Berthaâs influence, welcomed St Augustine in 597 AD. He became the first English king to convert to Christianity, paving the way for a major cultural shift across the British Isles.
Together, they helped plant the roots of Christianity in England â right here in Canterbury.
