🧠 Geology Meets Adventure!

🔬 What Are Pillow Lavas?

🪨 Pillow lavas are bulbous, rounded volcanic rock structures that form when molten lava erupts underwater, usually at mid-ocean ridges or submarine volcanoes.

🔥 When the lava meets cold ocean water, its outer surface cools and hardens instantly, forming a crust.
🌡️ Meanwhile, the lava inside keeps flowing, pushing against this hardened shell and inflating into pillow-like shapes.

🌀 These pillows often range in size from 30 cm to over 1 meter, and can appear smooth, cracked, or blistered, depending on how fast they cooled and the gases inside them.

🌍 Geological Significance:

📌 These pillow basalts are part of the Semail Ophiolite, one of the world’s best-exposed sections of oceanic crust on land.
They formed during tectonic plate divergence in the ancient New Tethys Ocean.

🧭 Their presence here shows:

  • 📈 Evidence of ancient seafloor spreading zones

  • 🧩 Clues to the positions of lost oceans and continental plates

  • 🧱 The transition of submarine lava to surface exposure due to tectonic uplift

Today, these formations sit exposed on land, a reminder that this area was once the floor of a deep ocean. Their story is written in stone, waiting for explorers like you to uncover it 🔍🗺️

🚶 How to Explore

🅿️ Start at the Parking Area (Either Parking Option 1 or 2):
Oppsite to pillow lave for option 01 or Near a small bridge, a lone Sidr (Christ’s Thorn) tree 🌳, and a telecom sign 📡for option 02.

🥾 From there:
Take a short hike (100–200m).
The pillow basalts are spread over the hilltop’s flat rocky surface, clearly visible across the terrain.

🛑 Please:
Do NOT dig, damage, or remove anything from the site.
This is a protected geological formation.

📝 EarthCache Logging Task

➡️ To log this EarthCache, please complete the learning task below based on your observations at the site.

🧪 1) Observation

What do the pillow basalts look like up close?
Are they smooth, cracked, layered, or bubbly?
What does their texture tell you about how they cooled?

🌊 2) Formation Insight

Briefly explain how pillow lava forms and why it takes this shape when lava meets ocean water.

📏 3) Geological Interpretation

Estimate the size range of the pillow structures (in cm or meters).
What could variation in size suggest about the lava flow conditions?

🏜 4) Environmental Contrast

You're standing in a dry desert, yet the rocks here formed underwater.
How is that possible? What does it tell you about Oman’s ancient past?

📸 5) Photo Task

Take a photo of the site, ideally with the pillow lava
Posting is optional but always appreciated 🙌
