Of special significance to the Rural Village and Farmstead collection of six original structures is the Glass family cabin, built probably before the founding of the town of Sharpsburg in 1763 and which once stood on East Chapline Street in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
Chapline Street was named after Joseph Chapline, a founding father of Maryland. Born into the English gentry and co-owner of the successful Ohio Company, Chapline receive 11,000 acres for his military and financial support of the French and Indian War from 1754 to 1763. Chapline had
approximately 300 acres of land surveyed and created 187 lots. The Glass family cabin was built on lot 82. On July 9th, 1763, Chapline founded the town of Sharpsburg, named in honor of his good friend, Governor Horatio Sharpe of Maryland.
