Welcome to Tippin' Rock at Hewes Hill. You are looking for a small silver bison tube hanging in an evergreen tree. There is a waypoint for easy parking and ~100m walk to the trailhead kiosk where physical maps are available. A Garmin eTrex was used to capture the coordinates, but accuracy can be affected by surroundings and signal strength. If your GPS provides a better set of coordinates, feel free to include them in your log to help improve the search for others.
Tippin’ Rock Trail, Hewes Hill: Enjoy a 1.8-mile (round-trip) excursion up Hewes Hill (912-ft. elevation) to a 40-ton boulder perched on ledge, which can be rocked with the push of a shoulder! From the field’s edge on Warmac Road, the trail rises uphill steadily through mixed forests of towering hemlock, oak and pine; there is a short, steeper climb as you crest the top of the ridge. Bring binoculars to look for warblers, thrushes and scarlet tanagers. You’ll reach Tippin’ Rock itself at 0.65 miles. Continue another 0.2 mi. to open cliff-top ledges that offer beautiful views of surrounding hills, especially in fall.
Distance: 1.3 mi. round trip to Tippin’ Rock; 1.8 mi. to ledges and back.
Difficulty: Moderate; ~320 ft. elevation gain.
Guidelines: 156-acre conservation easement held by the Monadnock Conservancy. Day use only; no fires or motorized vehicles.
Parking: On Warmac Road about a half mile from Rte. 32, park in the small lot across from Chebaco Kennels. Do not block gate. In the back right corner of the field is the Trailhead
