Sohar Fort is one of the most iconic historical and geological landmarks in northern Oman. Perched on a coastal plain rich in copper 🪙 and natural stone, this site tells a story of earth, people, power, and preservation.

🪨 Geological Background
The base of Sohar Fort sits on coastal sedimentary deposits, mainly limestone formed in a shallow marine environment 🐚🌊. Over millions of years, the accumulation of shells, coral fragments, and marine organisms created thick layers of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) rock.
Key features you can observe:
🔍 Texture & Fossils: You may see shell imprints or fossil fragments in the stone blocks.
💧 Weathering Patterns & Pitting Formation: Along the base, you may notice small pits and cavities in the limestone. These are caused by coastal weathering, which works slowly over time:

Salt crystallization: Sea spray carries saltwater into tiny pores in the rock. As the water evaporates, salt crystals grow and push the rock apart, creating holes.
