đSt Lawrence Church War Memorial â Swindon Village
This modest memorial honours the men of Swindon Village who served, and lost their lives, in the two World Wars. It is located right next to the walkway leading to St. Lawrence Church.
The memorial, which was unveiled on April 13, 1920, is a humble but respectable stone obelisk constructed from Forest of Dean stone that rises to a height of about 11 feet from a square plinth and single-step base.
The front face bears the dedication:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE
OF SWINDON MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR
1914â1919
THEIR NAME SHALL LIVE FOR EVERMORE
Below are the names of six local men who fell during WWI, while the rear panel records five more who lost their lives in the Second World War, alongside the inscription:
AS DYING, AND BEHOLD WE LIVE
A more complete picture of the village's participation is provided by additional panels on the other two sides, listing other parishioners who served in the war and returned home to their families here in Swindon Village.
There are several war graves in the churchyard nearby, including those of servicemen with Commonwealth ties. Such as, Captain Douglas Ridley Clunes-Gabell (Gloucestershire Regiment & RAF), who lost his life in a flying accident in 1918, and Private Alfred Whitaker who served with the Canadian Infantry in WWI, who sadly passed away from illness after being discharged from the battalion.
