St. Joseph's Church: A Post-War Landmark

This geocache brings you to St. Joseph's Church, a prominent landmark in the South Oxhey area. Built in 1960 from designs by Archard & Partners and consecrated in 1981, this large, buff-brick church is a classic example of post-war ecclesiastical architecture, especially before the Second Vatican Council reforms.
As you approach, you'll notice its impressive scale, with a wide nave flanked by narrow aisles. The most striking view is from the road, where a severe campanile (bell tower) stands beside a tall transept, and a loggia runs along the ground level of the nave. Look for the tall windows, enlivened with unique cusp-like features.
Step inside (if accessible) and you'll find a light and airy interior with whitewashed walls and a flat ceiling. The focus is on a distinctive rounded arch leading to the sanctuary, which features significant marble work. The church also includes a large choir loft/organ gallery and full-height Lady Chapel and Sacred Heart Chapel on either side of the sanctuary, separated by decorative concrete screens.
St. Joseph's Church stands as a testament to the expansion of the South Oxhey area, which began as an LCC estate before WWII and grew significantly after, becoming almost a new town. The Diocese acquired this site, a separate parish was established in 1952, and the church quickly became a central part of this thriving community.
